Pool hall decorations: chlorine, moisture and guest safety

Water areas are demanding: high humidity, chlorine, intensive cleaning and thousands of guests, including children. We explain what matters for rocks and scenery in a water park or hotel pool.

Key information

  • Materials and finish must withstand moisture, chlorine and regular cleaning.
  • Rock shapes must not create hand-trap gaps or standing-water pockets.
  • Prefabrication reduces closure; at Suntago, on-site work took 5 working days.

Rocks, grottos and scenery are now common in water parks, thermal baths and hotel pool areas. They create atmosphere, guide guests between attractions and conceal equipment. Water areas are also among the toughest environments for decorations. Here is what we consider when making rocks for pools and water parks.

Moisture, chlorine and temperature

Pool-hall air is warm and humid, and the water contains disinfectants. Decorations must tolerate this for years without peeling, discolouration or absorption. GRP rocks are waterproof and do not absorb moisture; we select the surface finish for hall conditions and cleaning products.

Guest safety

Children use water areas, and people walk barefoot on wet floors. When shaping rocks, we ensure:

  • there are no gaps or openingswhere a child could insert a hand or foot,
  • there are no places where water stands – important for hygiene and appearance,
  • edges within guests’ reach are rounded and surfaces stable.

We worked this way at the campsite in the French Alps, where our rocks had to connect to a ship with water cannons made by another company. We adapted the joint geometry to avoid gaps and standing water.

Cleaning and maintenance

Water park staff clean the area daily. Rocks must be washable without damage, and their texture must not trap dirt in inaccessible areas. Before manufacture, we agree cleaning methods and staff access, such as inspection points and equipment hidden behind the decoration, with the operator.

A short operating interruption

Every closed day means lost revenue. We therefore do most work in the workshop: sculpt prototypes, prepare silicone moulds and cast GRP elements. At the venue, we only install them. Jungle Quest scenery at Suntago took around 4 weeks to prepare, with 5 working days in the water park.

Interface with pool systems

The decoration sits beside pool technology, services and the hall structure. We do not install pool technology, but coordinate penetrations, access points, drainage and decoration interfaces with its contractor. This keeps maintenance accessible and avoids clashes with other trades.

From idea to quotation

We can propose a theming concept or make decorations to an architect’s design. Plans or photographs, a description of the desired effect and a schedule are enough for the first conversation. For refurbishment in an operating venue, include possible installation windows immediately.

Frequently asked questions

Can artificial rocks stand in pool water?

Yes. GRP tolerates constant water contact. For elements in a pool or splash zone, we select the finish for conditions and coordinate fixings with the pool technology contractor.

How are pool hall rocks cleaned?

Regular washing with water and the venue's non-abrasive cleaning products is enough. We provide maintenance guidance at handover.

Can water park decorations be made without closing the venue?

Usually yes. Elements are made in the workshop, and installation is planned during maintenance, at night or in a closed zone. At Suntago, after approx. 4 weeks of preparation, we worked on site for 5 working days.
