Snow grottos are increasingly common in hotel sauna areas and water parks. After the sauna, guests enter a cold room with falling snow: a striking contrast and a memorable attraction. For good function and appearance, two parts must be separated from the start: technology and decoration.
What is a snow grotto?
It is a room or recess in a sauna area kept below freezing, with a machine that produces snow. It cools the body quickly after a sauna, like a cold shower or plunge pool, but more dramatically. It is usually combined with stone or rock decor to reinforce the setting.
What makes up a snow grotto?
- Cooling and snow production – cooling unit, snow generator and control system.
- Insulation and doors – partitions maintaining low temperature and limiting condensation outside the grotto.
- Drainage – melting snow needs somewhere to go, so the floor is designed with a fall and drain.
- Decor – wall and ceiling cladding, rock elements, seating and lighting.
Who is responsible for what?
A specialist technology company designs and installs the cooling and snow system. The decoration contractor handles the rock setting and, if agreed, lighting. This was the case in the snow grotto in Istebna: we made 20 m² of rock and installed LED strips, while snow and cooling systems were outside our commission. We agree equipment openings, maintenance access and drainage with the installer before producing the rocks.

Which material suits grotto decor?
The cladding faces tough conditions: cold, moisture, melting snow and temperature changes when the door opens. GRP tolerates water and frost, does not absorb water and weighs approx. 6 kg/m², allowing wall and ceiling installation without a heavy structure. We finish texture and colour by hand and plan divisions for unobtrusive joints.
Lighting a snow grotto
Cool blue light emphasises rock folds and a sense of cold. LED strips are best hidden in cracks and behind form edges, with power supplies accessible outside the cold zone. We agree lighting positions with the rock shape while still in the workshop.
How long does decor installation take?
Most work is done in the workshop, leaving installation at the venue. In Istebna, rockwork preparation took a week and fitting the grotto took one evening. For an operating hotel, this keeps the sauna closure short. We discuss organisation in the checklist installing decorations in an operating venue.
Snow, salt or shower grotto?
A snow grotto cools the body; a salt grotto offers relaxation in a salt microclimate; a shower grotto is a rock shower surround by a pool or in a SPA. Each has different technical requirements.
