Almost every garden has something we would rather not see: a septic lid, inspection chamber, valve, connection box or outdoor heat-pump unit. It can be screened as a natural part of the garden, provided maintenance access and operating conditions remain intact.
What do we most often hide in gardens?
- Septic tanks and domestic treatment systems – access lids and ventilation pipes.
- Chambers and valves – drain inspections, wells and irrigation valves.
- Boxes and connections – water meters, gas connections and electrical boxes.
- Equipment – heat pumps, air conditioning units, pool pumps and pond filters.
Rule one: maintenance access
Every cover must be quickly removable, movable or openable for meter reading, tank emptying or pump servicing. Lightweight elements work best: a GRP rock cover weighs several times less than stone while looking like a boulder. Do not bury lids or plant strong-rooted plants over them.

Septic tanks and chambers
The simplest option is a rock cover sized to the lid. A decorative cover does not replace a load-bearing lid and is not for vehicle traffic. Tank ventilation must stay open; use a form with openings that preserves airflow. Read more about cover selection in the article how to hide an inspection chamber in a garden.
Heat pumps and air conditioners
An outdoor heat-pump unit needs free airflow and manufacturer-specified clearances. A solid enclosure may reduce performance and cause icing. Use an open screen or rock wall with large openings at the recommended distance, and discuss the design with the heat-pump installer.
Boxes, connections and storage in rock
Larger elements can be enclosed in a rock together with tool storage. This is how the garden storage enclosed in rock in Ingolstadtwas made: decorative outside, with doors and equipment space inside. We design such enclosures to measure, including ventilation and service access.
Rock or plants?
Plants hide things well, but grow: after a few years they may cover a lid or block airflow. A rock screen keeps its shape without pruning. Combining a screen beside the equipment with low plants around it works best. Find inspiration on the page rock decorations for the garden.
